Bucknell Univeristy Wins Webby Award for Web Site

Bucknell University won Webby Awards from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, picked from over 10,000 entries. Becknell was crowned for the best school or university Web site. The academy specifically praised Bucknell’s virtual tour. Visitors to the site can click buttons to select the search category. The site then shows visitors a campus map, with arrows pointing to areas at the university in which those interests might be developed.

A One-Year Associate Degree?

Do you want to earn an associate degree in one year with an 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule. five days a week? This is what Ivy Tech Community College is doing. Nicole Arthur (see picture on the left), started this fall, will earn an associate degree in health-care support in one year, reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Students Retain Information In-printed Format Better

Students had lower reading comprehension of scrolling online material than they did of print-like versions, according to the study at Arizona State University.

The report, “To Scroll or Not to Scroll: Scrolling, Working Memory Capacity, and Comprehending Complex Texts,” described how two groups, of 20 students each, wrote essays after reading materials in either print-like or scrolling formats. Those given the scrolling versions to read had poorer comprehension of the material.

The study also finds that the online scrolling version document had little impact on the students with high working-memory capacity, or a good ability to process and retrieve information. Mr. Sanchez, a co-author of the study, said such people could have more cognitive resources able to remember static locations within an online text.

8 in 10 Students Turn to Wikipedia for Research

The researchers at University of Washington Information School published a report recently on “How Today’s College Students Use Wikipedia for Course-Related Research”. The following are their findings:

Students’ driving need for background context makes Wikipedia one of the predictable workarounds that many students use, especially during the first stages of their research process.
Course–related research may begin with Wikipedia, but it rarely ends there. In our study, students employed a complex information problem strategy in their research processes, reliant on a mix of information resources that were from scholarly sources and public Internet sites.
In our study, we found the combination of coverage, currency, comprehensibility, and convenience drives Wikipedia use, in a world where credibility is less of a given — or an expectation from students — with each passing day.
Overall, college students use Wikipedia. But, they do so knowing its limitation. They use Wikipedia just as most of us do — because it is a quick way to get started and it has some, but not deep, credibility.
